How do I make my sharepoint site show up on various search engines
I've answered your search engine submission query in four parts: some
general tips, free submissions, paid submissions, and my
recommendations for submitting your site.

SOME TIPS
=========

- Never use a service that promises to submit your URL to thousands of
search engines - there are only a handful worth submitting to, and the
others can cause more problems than benefits.

- Make your free submissions as soon as possible, as soon as there is
some content on your site. It can take a month or two for your site to
appear in the search results. When your content changes, the search
engines will notice, so don’t worry about it being unfinished.

- The best page to submit to free submission services is a site map.
It doesn't need to be fancy, just a page of links to every page on
your website.

- Make sure your website is up & running at all times. If the search
engine robot visits when your site is down, it might not come back.

- If you have the same content elsewhere, at a different website, make
sure that it is removed, or redirects to the new site - ask for a
clarification if this applies to you.

FREE SUBMISSIONS
================

Once upon a time all search engines had this, but now there are but a
few. Submitting once is enough - then wait a month or two. Despite
there being many websites that can automate the submission process for
you, it is quite quick and easy to do it manually and avoids a few
problems (like too many submissions via the same website in one day).

Just visit these web pages and fill out the info:

Google
://www.google.com/addurl.html

Yahoo!
http://dir.yahoo.com/Entertainment/Actors_and_Actresses/
If your site is purely a fan site, and is non-commercial, then find
the appropriate category at Yahoo and submit for free, using the link
at the bottom left of the category page. Sometimes you can be listed
quite quickly, often it takes a year or two (they have a big backlog
of submissions) and most likely it will never be listed. When a search
engine has a paid submission service, their commitment to the free
submissions wanes.

Inktomi
http://www.hotbot.lycos.co.uk/submit.html
Hotbot UK still has a form for free submissions - it can't do any harm
submitting your URL, but I think the odds of it getting you onto the
Inktomi index is quite small.

Alltheweb
http://www.alltheweb.com/add_url.php

AltaVista
http://addurl.altavista.com/sites/addurl/newurl

Walhello
http://www.walhello.com/addlinkgl.html

Open Directory
http://dmoz.org/Arts/Performing_Arts/Acting/Actors_and_Actresses/
This is the basis of Google Directory. Find the appropriate category
and click on Add URL at the top of the page. Getting listed can take
anywhere between one day and a couple of months. A listing can improve
your ranking in Google search results.

Zeal
http://www.zeal.com/users/register.jhtml
This is for submitting non-commercial sites to Looksmart. Requires
registration before you can submit a site. Then go to
Celebrities/Actors via their home page.

PAID SUBMISSIONS
================

By paying you can be listed within a day or two.

Make sure that your site is fully functional and best fits the
category you select. Some of these services (like Yahoo and Looksmart)
do not guarantee to list you, and may not if you don't meet their
standards - so check out all the small print.

Yahoo Express
http://docs.yahoo.com/info/suggest/busexpress.html
Yahoo Express requires a US$299.00 non-refundable, recurring annual
fee. Being listed at Yahoo will improve your ranking in other search
engines.

Looksmart
http://listings.looksmart.com/?synd=none&chan=lshomeft
$49 to get listed, and then 15 cents every time someone clicks through
to your site. This could become much more expensive than using
pay-per-click services like Overture and Findwhat.

Alltheweb / Lycos
http://searchservices.lycos.com/searchservices/select_overview.asp?co=atw
Annual Membership: $18, Annual Cost per URL: $12
12 month subscription

AltaVista - Express Inclusion
http://www.altavista.com/sites/search/express_incl
First URL  $39, URL #2-10  $29.00 each, URL #11-500  $19.00 each
6 month subscription

Inktomi via Verisign
http://www.netsol.com/en_US/promotions/offers/options/inktomi.jhtml
Inktomi via INeedHits
http://ink.ineedhits.com/
Inktomi's index feeds Altavista, HotBot, iWon, LookSmart, MSN,
Overture, DogPile and other search engines.
1st URL $39, URLs 2 - 1000 $25 each
12 month subscription
The two different services for paid submission to Inktomi are
basically the same.

Ask Jeeves / Teoma
http://ask.ineedhits.com/
1st
URL $30, URLs 2 - 1000 $18 each
12 month subscription
Listed within 7 days, and your listing refreshes every 7 days

I RECOMMEND
===========

Submit to every free service, and do it as soon as possible. Pay
special attention to the Open Directory submission, it and Google are
the most important.

If you are in a hurry to receive traffic, consider one of the paid
submissions, that way you will get hits while you wait a month or two
for the free submissions to be indexed.

What makes us Different from our competition?

From their origins in the early days of the Internet, portals have evolved from aggregation to integration to collaboration. Research suggests that organizations have tended to develop several different portals, each with limited functionality for different needs. One report suggests that the number of businesses with more than one portal increased from 21 percent to 53 percent in just one year.

The current innovation in portal technology is aimed at delivering easier development of enterprise-wide systems for transactional and collaborative purposes. The latest wave of portals delivers unified and managed access to all forms of business application and information held. This means extending common business processes to more users across the enterprise.

SharePoint360, LLC is your one stop for a collaborative portal solution that will enable employees, customers, and partners access to critical data from all areas of your organization.  Think of SharePoint as the central nervous system of your business.  This central component can feed information to various users whether that data stems from your CRM Solution, your ERP Solution, or a custom set of applications that are needed on a daily basis.

SharePoint360 can also provide you a hosted solution which will free up your IT staff so they can focus on critical issues that often require a rapid response.  We offer a unique 'Boutique' with our rapid deployment solution (RDS).  This unique installation of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 contains many of the features you see in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS) without the added costs and overhead to get it up and running.

I encourage you to call or email us to find out more about our unique offerings.  With over 50 years combined SharePoint experience, our team knows what it takes to get the job done right the first time.

Working Smarter, Not Harder
It's one of the most pressing challenges that customers face today: How do we manage an ever-increasing amount of data and administration while maximizing time for meetings, strategic planning, and operations management?
Resolving this has been a central goal for software developers worldwide. Even though much time and money have been spent on creating viable solutions, none of the solutions have quite hit the mark. Meanwhile, organizations and governmental bodies have continued to amass vast amounts of information that is almost inaccessible to those who really need it.
Surveys reveal that workers get 50-75% of information from other employees rather than from central databases, and 80% of enterprise information still resides on individual hard drives. These percentages mean that workers currently hold the key to the knowledge economy. And when employees leave a workplace the data leaves with them. So is there an answer?
With Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS 2007), you can create high-impact  portals that provide low total cost of ownership, are easy to use, and are supported by a global economy of users, developers, and expert solution providers.
You can help increase your organizational effectiveness by using MOSS 2007 to enable you to intuitively find relevant information, share processes, and connect to people from anywhere. These innovative portal solutions allow users to access and collaborate on relevant information across an entire company on one convenient screen.
Work smarter, not harder.......

District-wide Social Networking: Many-to-Many

The phrase “social networking” is getting over used these days; but, it accurately describes one of the most powerful uses of web based collaboration tools.

As a parent of three teenagers, I am constantly trying to find phone numbers, addresses, and/or who to contact for game or practice schedule changes.  Wow! It sure would be great if all I had to do was to log in to one place, search by team names, class identifiers, or some other known bit of information and find links to whatever it was that I didn’t know or what has changed since the beginning of the school year or season

Social networking is often meant as a people-to-people connection. I know my son is on a particular after school baseball team.  I also know that there are several other similar teams in my area as well.  Wouldn’t it be great if I could search a site for all related teams playing at the same time and then to determine if I already know some of the parents from the other teams that might be able to pick up or drop my son after the game? Social networking can also be a team-to-team-to-team connection.

What about checking with a school site to understand exactly what information they want on an otherwise confusing permission form? Or what about the kids that have different last names than their parents and step dads/moms? How do I find these people?

Tools such as Microsoft’s Windows for SharePoint Services is one new tool that can help both school administrators, educators, parents, and kids alike make sense of the otherwise seemingly chaotic after school environment they find themselves scurrying around in.  With the built in blog and wiki capabilities, team leaders, coaches, and parents can easily socially connect with each other and expedite the exchange of ever changing yet accurate information.

SharePoint360 has helped many organizations solve these types of issues very quickly, within days, not weeks or months.  If this is an area that you or your school district can use some additional help, please let us know.  For more information, please contact sales@sharepoint360.com

Real Document Management: Not where? But When, as in Now!

Document management systems, in some way or other, have been around for many years. The "Taxonomy" or classification and categorization of files have been the mainstay for how these systems build their structure. That is no longer as important as it once was. What is important is finding what you are looking for no matter what type of file or content it is: email, word processing, spreadsheet, graphic, etc.

As long as all organizational files are stored in secure, backed-up servers, as compared to single copies being saved on local hard drives, the actual file location becomes less important because of the new very fast, enterprise-wide search and indexing capabilities of the new tools such as Microsoft's Windows for SharePoint Services.

For some companies or organizations, version control is a requirement whether required by various compliance regulations or simply because the rate of revision and changes requires constant assurance that only the most recent file is being edited and reviewed. How many times have you, or someone you know, had the misfortune to spend an hour editing a file only to learn that is has been superseded by more current information?

Or do you have a need to really enforce that documents go through an approval process and that all the players throughout the approval workflow actually take the time to truly read and approve the documents in a timely manner?

SharePoint360 has helped many companies, school districts, construction projects, community organizations, etc. successfully implement solid yet flexible document control management systems. We are glad to help you too! For more information, please contact SharePoint360 at sales@sharepoint360.com.

Unbounded Creativity: Wacky Students Wiki Sites

Needless to say, once students really understand and embrace collaborative learning such as using student edited wiki sites, it's a whole new game!

It is a new game for both students and teachers. Vicki A. Davis, who writes the Cool Cat Teacher blog, http://coolcatteacher.blogspot.com/ , is renowned for her witty and informative blog posting about practical ways to really engage students in committed learning. There are numerous ways that web enabled collaboration tools are helping teachers invigorate classroom learning.

A great way to review what is the current state-of-the-art in educational blogging and wiki-ing is at http://incsub.org/awards/2006/nominations-for-best-teacher-blog-2006/ . This site is currently showing the EduBlog "Nominations for Best Teacher Blog 2006". This site offers some great examples from the teacher's perspective on how they are actually using these amazing tools. Many postings have links to each teacher's personal blog as well as many of their student sites for your review.

SharePoint360 (SP360) is actively supporting these new educational tools as part of the overall installation of Microsoft's Windows for SharePoint Services. SP360 can help your district, school, community project, etc. successfully implement these tools and get you up-and-running within days. For more information, please contactsales@sharepoint360.com.

Playing at the Buick Invitational

Quick summary: Understanding how to use blogs and wikis by reading about how one husband and wife couple in their late 80's are using both and their little "digs" at each other.

The scene: I went to the Buick Invitational this past Saturday at the beautiful Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego. Unfortunately, I was late getting there so that the only available parking was way in the back of a remote lot and I could only take the shuttle buses to the course. It was a long walk from the car to the already very long lines of people waiting to get on the buses.

An elderly couple In front of me was very concerned about standing in such a long line and they were debating the wisdom having to wait so long to get to the tournament. About that time a security guard stopped to tell the elderly lady that her purse she was carrying was too big to be allowed on the golf course. After a brief, somewhat sharp exchange, she agreed to take her purse all the way back to the car. Turning to her husband, she asked (even though it sounded more like a demand), "Will you wait for me before you get on the bus?!"

"Of course," he replied as she quickly marched off down what I imagined would be a long walk to the car. He watched her walking away and then looked at me and said grinning, "It would cost me a lot less to wait for her than to suffer a divorce from her." He added, more to himself than to me, "Do you think she will likely hurry back by running or will she just walk back?"

Not exactly sure if I should answer him or not, I inquired politely, "How long have you two been married?" "A little over 35 years" he said still grinning. "She'll walk back" I responded slightly ginning.

She did walk back carrying a much smaller purse and reached us just as we were about to board a bus. The couple sat down in the row in front of me and as they settled into their seats, the husband started telling her the discussion he and I had about if she was going to run or walk back to the bus line.

Here's the point of the story: "Of course I was only going to walk but I did hurry for you back and forth and I only grabbed a few items I thought you might need during the day." "Thanks," he said, gently hugging her. Then looking at both her and me, he added, "I bet you are going to write about what you selected in your blog." Now I was interested, "A blog? You write a blog?"

She slightly turned in the seat so she could see me better and stated proudly, "I write a blog about what it is like to be over 80 years old! I tell those insurance companies a thing or two and all those idiots who think we don't understand new things, I tell them too what I think! I get lots of comments back about my postings and we have a lot of fun exchanging views and opinions with those who read my blog postings; but more importantly, I know that they have seen my opinion first and that helps me make sure that I get "heard" first and that I get to direct how the conversation is going."

"I'm impressed, you really do understand the power of blogging," I said, noticing how enthusiastic and energized she had suddenly become.

She nudged her husband, "Why don't you tell him what you do?"

"I am one of the six remaining high school graduates form a small town in the very rural mid west. We have a wiki site where we each write about our days in high school and what we remember of those days and the people we went to school with. Each of us will often edit each other's work, clarifying dates and facts, but we also let each other tell the stories, sometimes fictionalizing the stories, just to entertain ourselves. My online name is 'Wikiy old man," he said jokingly.

The point: As we started getting off the bus, I was thinking how cool is this! Here's an elderly couple in their 80s who know more about using blogs and wikis than some of my executive friends half their age. Blogs to steer and focus conversations and wikis to collaborate facts, brainstorm ideas, and share cultural stories. It is truly an exciting time to play! And then, there's golf….
